Pre-Treatment Instruction

What is a PDO Thread Lift?

PDO threads are a non-surgical, collagen-stimulating treatment that improves skin firmness and texture over time. They are designed to strengthen the skin and soften fine lines rather than lift sagging tissue.

How does it work?

Polydioxanone (PDO) threads are placed into the skin where they act as a scaffold to trigger the body’s natural healing response. As the threads gradually dissolve, they stimulate neocollagenesis, which is the production of new collagen, along with elastin. This helps strengthen and thicken the skin over time. This controlled stimulation improves skin structure and overall skin quality from within, without lifting or repositioning tissue.

Is it safe?

PDO threads have been safely used in medicine for many years and are made from a biodegradable, biocompatible material. PDO mono threads used in Australia are TGA approved medical devices and are considered safe when performed by a qualified practitioner.

What happens during treatment?

A local anaesthetic (lidocaine) is applied to the entry points to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure. Once the area is numb, PDO mono threads are carefully introduced into the skin using a fine needle. The threads are placed strategically within the skin to stimulate collagen production and improve skin quality over time. The procedure is minimally invasive and generally well tolerated, with treatment times varying depending on the area being treated.

Which areas can be treated?

PDO threads can be used in many areas of the face and neck to improve skin quality, firmness, and fine lines. Popular areas include the forehead, brows, cheeks, smile lines, marionette lines, jawline, chin, and neck. This treatment is ideal for improving mild laxity and overall skin texture rather than creating lift.

What results can I expect?

Results from PDO threads develop gradually. In the weeks following treatment, the skin begins to appear firmer, smoother, and more refined as new collagen forms. Improvements in texture, fine lines, and overall skin quality typically become noticeable from around four to six weeks, with results continuing to improve over several months. While the threads themselves dissolve within approximately eight to twelve weeks, the collagen they stimulate remains, allowing results to last up to six to twelve months depending on individual skin quality and lifestyle factors.

Treatment may not be suitable if:

  • You have active acne, broken skin, skin infections, or are prone to cold sores in the treatment area

  • You have consumed alcohol within 48 hours prior to treatment

  • You are taking anticoagulant medications such as aspirin, warfarin, or heparin.
(Please continue taking any prescribed medications unless advised otherwise by your doctor. However, we recommend stopping certain non-essential supplements prior to treatment, including evening primrose oil, vitamins A, D, and E, fish oil, flaxseed oil, magnesium, garlic, and ginkgo, as these may increase the risk of bruising.)

Treatment is not suitable if:

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding

  • You have an autoimmune disease, diabetes or infection

Post-Treatment Information

Most people will have no problem resuming normal activities immediately after treatment. If all instructions are followed the process will be comfortable, fast and provide an effective recovery time.

General aftercare advice:

  • Some pain/discomfort after treatment can be expected, Paracetamol can be taken if required.

  • Do not have any other aesthetic procedures (such as toxins, fillers, peels etc.) for 7 days

  • Avoid extreme temperatures, alcohol and anticoagulants for 7 days. Those taking Prescribed anticoagulants such as aspirin/warfarin must continue to do so but must be aware that bruising is more likely

  • Gently wash the treated area as required, but do not rub or massage for 2 weeks

  • It is important not to overstretch the treated area (i.e. open the mouth wide) for 4 weeks (avoid dental treatment during this time if possible)

  • Do not have Radio-frequency, IPL, Laser or other heat treatments near the treated area for 10 weeks

Are there any side effects?

PDO thread treatments are minimally invasive and generally well tolerated, with minimal downtime. As the threads are placed using fine needles, there are no incisions or stitches, and scarring is unlikely. Common and temporary side effects may include mild redness, swelling, tenderness, or bruising at the treatment sites. These effects usually resolve within a few days. Some patients may also experience a feeling of tightness or sensitivity in the treated area, which settles as the skin heals.
